A common skin complaint amongst women, stretch marks appear when the skin’s collagen and elastic fibres are stretched to the extent that tiny tears occur in the dermis. Notoriously difficult to treat, over-the-counter creams have been proven to be ineffective.
Causes can include rapid weight gain during pregnancy, hormonal changes, yo-yo dieting, obesity, and excessive weight training can also play a part.
Stretch marks usually start as angry red or purple lines that fade to silvery white and are most often seen on the tummy or hips. Treatments are available to reduce their appearance, but to date, no treatment has been proven to completely heal stretch marks.
